Safer Routes - SmartTrips to School

Brought to you by Safe Routes to School, the SmartTrips program offers free transportation resources for families of 2nd and 5th grade students. Order forms full of maps, activity books and safety information about walking, biking, public transit and carpool were mailed to families throughout February and March.  You can choose to receive the information your family needs, and students get to pick out a free gift just for ordering.  Orders will be delivered by bicycle right to your door.  In addition, Safe Routes will give $5 to the school for every order placed by a Forest Park family.  Forest Park has already raised $75 through SmartTrips this year.  Let's see what we can do by May 1, the order deadline.  Don't miss out on this great opportunity.

Want to be a Star?  Musical Theater Classes

Calling all Kindergarten through 4th grade students interested in improvisational theater, singing and performance.  Classes start March 29th and run through May 3rd Mondays from 2:15pm-3:20pm in the FPE gym.  Bring the enrollment form and payment to the first day of class if you are interested in joining.  For questions, contact Joan at 503-645-1252.

Children's Theater Workshop - April 9

Please mark your calendars for the upcoming Children's Theater Workshop at Lincoln High School on April 9th, 8:30am-3:00pm.

The workshop, set for children to learn about the different aspects of theater, is open for kids 4th grade through 8th grade.  Cost for the workshop is $30, information packets will be sent to FPE or can be obtained from Natalie McDonald at nataliefloss@gmail.com.  Packets should be turned in to Lincoln High School by April 2 (there will be a $10 late fee).

Lost & Found    

Is your child missing a coat, shirt or lunch box?  Please take a moment to look over the tables of Lost & Found items in the main hall in front of the display case next week.  Any items not claimed by the end of the week (March 19th) will be sent to the PTA Clothing Center.

Campaign Spot LIght:  Stop + Walk

How do you feel about pick up and drop off at our school?  Nationally, 30.4% of parents identified traffic related danger as a major barrier preventing their children from walking to school.  Yet, 50% of students hit by cars near schools are hit by parents of other students.  Many Portland schools have taken on a Safe Routes campaign to address this situation.

Stop + Walk is an encouragement campaign aimed at decreasing traffic congestion at schools.  Stop + Walk encourages parents who drive to school to drop off or pick up their children 2-4 blocks from school.  This allows children to walk the rest of the way.  With more students walking to school, traffic congestion and pollution around the school decrease and physical activity and overall student safety increase.

Lincoln Youth Football is a program is designed for 3rd-8th graders who would like to learn to play tackle football.  Coaches and LYF Board Members will be available to answer your questions on registration, equipment, practices and games on Wednesday, April 7th:

• Session 1:  6:00pm-7:00pm
• Session 2:  7:00pm-8:00pm

Calling All Students - Toys Needed

 

Gently used toys are needed for a used toy sale on Friday, March 5th from 4:00pm-7:00pm in the FPE gymnasium. 

The used toy sale is a community wide student event supported by the PTA.  The monetary proceeds will be donated to MercyCorps to help with relief in Haiti.  All unsold toys will be donated to Goodwill.

Toy drop off is at the school during the week of March 1st through 5th. 

• There will be a large box in the school lobby that students can put toys in starting Monday, March 1st. 
• Volunteers in Dr. Seuss hats will be available in front and back of the school at the morning and afternoon car lines to collect toys on Wednesday, March 3rd and Thursday, March 4th. 
• On Friday, March 5th the toys can be dropped off in the morning drop off line or put the box in the lobby.

Please do not send baby equipment, large sports equipment or books.  Books should be saved for the 5th Grade Legacy Used Book Sale in April.

There's Still Time - Registration for Fencing Closes March 5 

Often called a physical game of chess, fencing develops endurance, coordination, agility, poise and balance.  While fencing is a physical sport, it is also a mental game requiring concentration, quick decision-making and problem-solving.  It's an ideal activity for people of all ages and sizes.

All equipment will be provided, please have your children wear long pants and closed toed shoes.  Class day is Friday from 2:20pm-3:20pm, starting March 12 and ending May 7.  There will be no class the week of spring break.
