Many parents are already aware that the Forest Park fifth grade classes participate in a year long partnership with the Audubon Society of Portland. This partnership centers on curriculum that augments and extends district and state standards in science and social studies. Each grade five teacher will use the Audubon experiences to integrate math and literacy into supporting lessons, as well.
The Audubon partnership consists of three main components:
- A series of four in-class seminars, led by visiting naturalists.
- Two visits to the Audubon Sanctuary adjacent to Forest Park (the park, not the school!)
- A two-night visit to the Marmot Cabin natural area near the Bull Run Preserve.
The in class visits will commence in November, and planning for the spring overnight is already going on. The sanctuary visits will occur in mid-October and in late March/early April. Each class will visit the sanctuary on a different day:
- Mrs. Morris: Tuesday, October 14th
- Ms. Robbins: Wednesday, October 15th
- Mr. Wade: Thursday, October 16th
- Ms. Gardener: Friday, October 17th
We will travel in parent-driven automobiles. We are looking for drivers willing to participate! If you are interested, please help us by filling out a
Volunteer Background Check Download 2282_m_english1.pdf
and a
Driver Qualification Form Download Driver_Vehicle_Qualification_Form.pdf
It takes the school district several weeks to process these forms, so we hope to have ALL drivers identified within the next week or so. If you have filled out these forms in the past, you may still be listed as "approved" in the office; for the safety of the kids, however, these documents do expire after a certain period-please check with Pam and Kelly at 503-916-5400 if you have any questions.
More information will come home as the trips get closer, but in the meantime THANK YOU for your help! By using parent drivers rather than chartering a school bus, we are able to spend more of the Student Activity Donation money on curriculum, rather than transportation. The teachers could not provide this trip without your help!
