Third Grade Fun

Welcome back from Spring Break! I hope you had a restful and relaxing week. We're excited to be back at school.We're starting lots of exciting new units in third grade this month.

If you hear your child singing songs about Babe the Blue Ox and Paul Bunyan, it's because we've started working on the musical America's Tallest Tales. We'll be practicing during the next month and will let you know when we're ready to share our creative talents with you.

  We are beginning a new unit in science about Rocks and Minerals. We'll be examining many different rocks and minerals, describing their properties, learning about the rock cycle, and exploring how they are used.

If you have any extra cereal/food boxes or egg cartons, we would really appreciate it if you could send them into school. We need the boxes for a bridge activity to make our own vertical lift or bascule bridges. We need the egg cartons to organize our rocks and minerals for observation.

In math, we're starting a new unit in Investigations titled Turtle Paths. It focuses on geometry by exploring different angles, 2-D and 3-D shapes and area/perimeter.

This Friday, we are starting our dance artist in residence funded by Run for the Arts. We'll be learning  Mexican and Brazilian dances throughout April and part of May. We'll perform for you on Thursday, May 13th.

 
 

Homework week of 3/29 - 4/5, 2010

Welcome back from Spring Break! It is nice to see all the children rested, some tanned, and all full of stories! This weeks homework will be a Portland Landmark paragraph. Some ideas are included in the homework packet.

Homework Week of March 8-12, 2010

In the attachment, is the homework for March 8-12. As many of you know, next week the third grade classes will be taking their first State tests on the computer. Continue to make sure your children are well rested and are eating balanced meals. This is the best preparation! Please keep in mind that these tests are a moment in time, and are only one measure of your child's aptitude.

Third Grade Update

Wow! We're impressed with the craft and creativity that was used in making the wonderful bridges that the kids brought in Friday. They're on display upstairs and in the library. If you have time, come check them out. They're really amazing! 

This week, we'll be writing our bridge paragraphs that the kids have been working on for homework onto notecards. We'll practice in class the next few days and present our speeches Thursday and Friday.

Thanks to all of you that supported Forest Park Elementary at the auction with your time, energy and donations. It was a great success!

This Friday, we'll be celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday by wearing our pajamas to school and enjoying books read by guest readers.

Next week, we'll be starting Project Second Wind to collect food for the Oregon Food Bank. The goal is for everyone to bring in 35 pounds of food or seven dollars (they are equivalent).That way, we'll meet our goal. Thanks for your support!

As you might have heard, we have state testing next week. There is nothing you need to do except make sure your child eats a healthy breakfast and gets a good nights sleep next week. Below is the schedule.
