Below are the steps that we've completed in class this week (except typing the paragraph) and what you can do at home in the future to complete the Portland paragraph for homework.
Step 1: Look at the Idea sheet pasted in the back of the homework notebook and find something interesting to research. You can also come up with your own topic!
Step 2: Research your topic. You can look on the internet, printed material, etc. We've found using google is pretty easy. Wikipedia, although not offical, usually has pertinent information that is accessible to kids.
Step 3: Highlight just the major facts.

Step 4: Take notes based on what you highlighted. Notes do not have to be complete sentences, just main ideas.
Step 5: Write paragraph which includes a topic sentence, three supporting sentences and a conclusion sentence. We've discussed how at this point, stating your opinion for the conclusion is a good way to go.
Step 6: Revise the paragraph to make sure it sounds good and flows well. Edit for capitals, spelling, punctuation. This should all be shown in the comp book.

Step 7: Type the paragraph. Include a title, picture (computer image or hand drawn) paragraph and your name. You can get creative with fonts, spacing and size as long as it's not too much and you can read it.
